The Power of a Lifted Spirit

I need to focus on the songs for our shows this week on The Soul Train Cruise!

I think I'm on hour 20 without sleep. I can't help thinking that it is NOTHING compared to what life is like for people in a war zone right now. I'm keenly aware that while we are dancing, smiling and singing this week, others are living in conditions of pure hell and horror.

I will focus and sing and share all the beautiful and joyous moments, while learning, planning and finding more ways to help.

I've seen the way music can melt hearts and minds countless times. I know the power of song and Love. A lifted Spirit can move mountains. We can create miracles by actions. NEVER (not a word I use lightly) underestimate your power to change the world.

Let's go!

#Perspective

Everything is totally different, yet everything is exactly the same.
#Perspective #Focus

How am I going to color it THIS week? (Just thinking out loud.) Happy Monday everyone. xo

"Just thinking out loud" reminded me of this song:

Just Start

I was overwhelmed with tasks to be done, and was talking to myself out loud. I gave myself instructions and wrote them down:

"When you don't know where to start... start anywhere.
Just start."

It must have been a good idea because I managed to eat healthy, do workouts six days of the week, walk every day, get my receipts organized, get all the filing done, clean out the closet, write a new verse, practice / learn an upcoming show's worth of material, pack for a road trip and keep my sanity (along with all the regular daily tasks). I even made it to the spa!

Ahhhhh... the spa

I'm going to have to remember that instruction. ;) #JustStart

Have a great week!

T

The Good News

Early in the week I saw a news report that caught my attention. It was about a couple in Turkey who decided to feed Syrian refugees instead of hosting an expensive dinner reception for family and friends. Amazing.

The story stood out in sharp contract to other news stories. Then came the story of how police officers showed up to a three year old's birthday party when many of the guests cancelled at the last minute and the mother feared it was because of her son's autism. Beautiful.

It was so nice to hear about good, positive things happening amidst all of the other disheartening things. Later still in the week, yet another news report contained a stand out sentence. It said:

"We're often better at outrage than understanding."
- Steve Hartman

It was a story about a well-intentioned woman's community act that was not well received. One can understand the varying opinions on the building of a slave cabin - historic significance and intentions aside.

A major point in that story is how two people with very different perspectives can come to some understanding - and they did. It was another thought provoking and inspirational piece of news.

I suppose I've been watching a lot of news. I'm glad to be reminded that there are good stories. There are so many tragic things happening and so much anger and grief. It is easy to be overwhelmed. It's easy to just not watch at all, but then we'd just be uninformed.

I'll try to remember that even in the midst of unimaginable loss, amazing human spirit can be found. I don't have to stick my head in the sand in order to maintain my faith in the goodness of humanity. Terrible reports are media highlights, but there IS inspiration to be found. There IS understanding to be gained. I will look for good news. It is there too.

Namaste,

P.S. Just as I finished this, a news article popped up on my phone... a baby born... "amid unspeakable calamity..."

The Surround

Looking back on last week, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for the most wonderful group of creative people I have been Blessed to work with.

"Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher."
- Oprah Winfrey

It was a busy week with video shoots, props, costumes, travel planning and gig performance. Through it all, there were teams of creative minds coming together to make artistic endeavors come to life like magic. I loved every minute.

"When I was a kid, there was no collaboration; its you with a camera bossing your friends around. But as an adult, filmmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these films by yourself."
- Steven Spielberg

Teamwork is beautiful! When we build upon each other's ideas and push ourselves and each other to keep making everything "even better," the most amazing things happen.

On location shot - for one of our scenes

Here's to an upcoming week filled with inspiration and collaborative efforts! My most sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to our upcoming new song and video. It is a true honor and Blessing to be able to work together with all of you.

The Gray Area

"Throughout history,
it has been the inaction of those who could have acted;
the indifference of those who should have known better;
the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most;
that has made it possible for evil to triumph." - Haile Selassie

I believe there exists in all of us a deep-seated spark that motivates us to act - or not act. It is uniquely our own. It is part of our journey through life that we confront the forces within that speak to us, and that we learn to listen and understand our own motivations in order to improve ourselves - and the world.

"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy,
a quickening that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one you in all of time, this expression is unique.
And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.
The world will not have it..." - Martha Graham

(This quote appears in the booklet of my album)

We all have our own unique passions, fears, desires, and experiences that drive us to do what we do. What specifically motivates us into action can be deeply personal. We are responsible for our own actions and our motives are for us to examine. We push our own selves to new levels as we hold ourselves accountable and to higher standards of truth, integrity and honor.

Whether we realize it consciously or not, we know the truths in our own heart as God does. Do we accuse others of hate with hate in our own hearts? If we "hate" another for "hating" - we still hate. Do we taint our own causes by contaminating them with our own personal objectives? Do they become vehicles for our personal anger or need for approval, or do they become agendas for some reason less honorable than genuine commitment, purpose and love? It is only for us to answer.

"You can see the speck in your friend's eye.
But you don’t notice the log in your own eye.
How can you say, 'My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,'
when you don’t see the log in your own eye?
You show-offs! First, get the log out of your own eye.
Then you can see how to take the speck out of your friend’s eye." – Luke 6:41-42

I believe there exists inside each of us - a gray area. A place we have not yet clearly seen. A truth we have not yet completely uncovered. As we all flounder along trying to do the best we can, I hope and pray that we will each be informed enough to actively excavate a little more of ourselves so that we can move ourselves forward, progress in some way that is uniquely our own - toward a better self and a better world by extension.

The death of Freddie Gray and the events in Baltimore last week have inspired some amazing tests and testaments of courage, strength, faith, action, leadership and community. I've been moved to great sorrow and tears by tragic injustice and burning anger - and also to great pride as exquisite leadership and inspiring forces stepped up to the plate with unparalleled passion and conviction to overpower hate with love, prayer, and God.

"Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation." - Oscar Wilde

"What you are must always displease you,
if you would attain to that which you are not." - Saint Augustine

As the days, weeks, and even years relentlessly march on and we continue to face underlying issues surrounding these events and more... may we respect and honor ourselves and each other by shining some light on our own understanding and move ourselves to act, in our own unique ways, to better ourselves, our global family and the world we live in.

With deepest love and respect,
Namaste.

Get Up and GO!

It was a great week!  I finally had the energy to get up and get things done – and I did a lot.  There was a healthy balance of work-related and personal paperwork with creative projects.  Working off of a fluid sort of list, I just kept cranking through and checking things off.

The plan for this week is to keep it moving.  I am keenly aware that follow-through is everything.  I’ve got my new calendar, my lists, my mound of tasks to complete – and I am off!

Here’s wishing you all a productively satisfying week! xoxo

Namaste,
